OPEN AIR LAB IS DESIGNING A RETROFIT FABRIC FILTER SAIL TO BE ATTACHED TO THE RIGGINGS OF BOATS TRAVELING ALONG THE EAST RIVER, ACTIVELY CLEANING THE AIR OF POLLUTANTS AND DRAWING ATTENTION TO THE ISSUE OF AIR POLLUTION IN NEW YORK CITY.
In order for these filters to clean the air, there must be air flow. Most filters use fans to move air through the fabric. Instead, OPEN AIR LAB will attach the fabric to an already moving surface with high wind flow.
ONE OF The most polluted AREAS of New York IS along the highways that frame the East River. Attached to boats traveling along the East River, the filter will comb the coastline and capture otherwise free floating pollutants.
OPEN AIR LAB IS IN the dESIGN AND FABRICATION stages, DEVELOPING A composite filter that combines HEPA, carbon, and antibacterial fabrics.
OPEN AIR LAB’S air sails would be the first PASSIVE filter for outdoor public use the first LARGE SCALE attempt at cleaning the air in New York City.
